Remembering Dio

[KarlsMetal member "Kibitzer" had this to say about Ronnie James Dio, who passed away May 16th]:

Ronnie James Dio…. if I can use one word just to sum up what this man is to the Heavy Metal community, it is “Pioneer”. He was there at the beginning of the genre that we now call Heavy Metal and he was there before it had a name. Dio contributed a lot to the Heavy Metal community and he never allowed himself to be homogenized nor trapped in an industry that can suck the life out of you and bleed you dry without knowing it.

When he was in Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne left the band, Ozzy was a tough act to follow but that didn’t deter him from giving it his all. He was still a self made musician and he was always in control of what he wanted to do with his music and he was tenacious yet very caring toward his fans and took good care of them as he was one of only a handful of musicians in this business that was the “good guy”.

I was never an avid fan of Dio, but when I heard his music, it took me to a place that was different than the rest of the other bands. During a time today where Thrash, Power, Prog, Neo-Classical, Black, Hardcore, Death, Goth and Doom Metal are more prevalent today, many people forget that if it weren’t for Dio, a lot of these other sub-genres would never have existed. Dio is the musician and the man that was the crux and the blue print for future Heavy Metal bands. He had style but most of all he didn’t let stardom change him. When it was time to go home at the end of the day, he left Dio up on stage. Ronnie was the man that went home at the end of the show. I will surely miss him as he is one of a kind.

How true. I too found myself in a place that no other band can put me today when listening to Dio. Sure, individual bands have the ability to put my mind at ease or send me into a fantasy world, but none the way Dio did. I also wasn't a big fan, but damn could that man sing. He always had a special place in my metal born heart.
R.I.P. Dio.

One of my biggest influences vocally since 1978--Ronnie James Dio was first introduced to me by my cousin Al when I freaked out over the first ELF album cover (he went by his God-given name Ronald Padavona at the time). Then he played me RAINBOW's 'Rising' album and I was hooked. The news that Ozzy was being replaced by Ronnie 2 years later sent shock waves throughout the metal community-many were displeased that Dio was chosen to front the metal masters. I knew we were in for something special for sure. I still remember hurrying home with 'Heaven And Hell' under my arm. I could not get to my record player fast enough. When the needle hit the vinyl and the first crushing, galloping chords of 'Neon Knights' came blasting out of my light-up speakers (anyone remember those?)--I was hooked. This new Sabbath was going to CRUSH! When Dio's voice came in--soaring with emotion and POWER (and sounding nothing like Ozzy)--it was a match made in heaven (or should I say hell?)! Throughout the following 30+ years the man gave us so much outstanding music--whether with Sabbath, his own band DIO, or most recently HEAVEN AND HELL, he was truly a gift to metalheads everywhere. Always fan appreciative, intelligent, and TRUE to the sound that made him a Metal God, Ronnie never faltered in his mission to bring QUALITY metal music to the masses! Small in stature but a GIANT behind the microphone, he will be greatly missed by us all. I am still struggling with this great loss personally...I had the good fortune of meeting and speaking with him at length on two occasions--and the man was always kind and gracious. I used to have a band called DARK HARVEST that was a Sabbath, Ozzy and DIO tribute in the late 90's...I am now contemplating a strictly DIO tribute to help keep his memory alive. I will let everyone know when this project gets rolling. God Bless Ronnie James Dio--a true legend of metal.
